The Car Was Never The Reason She Bought The Car
Customers rarely buy because they understand a feature. They buy because they understand how it fits their life.
Over the years I’ve sold a lot of cars.
Some sales were straightforward.
Some were hard work.
Some I still remember 30 years later because they taught me something about customers.
This is one of those stories.
A lady came into the showroom looking for an estate car.
The reason was simple.
She had dogs.
In her mind, the decision had already been made. She needed an estate because that’s what dog owners buy.
At least that was her thinking.
To be honest, I couldn’t immediately disagree with her.
An estate is a practical choice.
- More space
- Larger boot
- Plenty of room for dogs
The problem was I genuinely believed the hatchback we were looking at would be a better fit for her overall needs.
The challenge wasn’t the car. The challenge was helping her see it.
We Hardly Talked About The Car
Most salespeople would probably have spent the drive talking about:
- engine performance
- fuel economy
- specification
- technology
- safety features
Instead, we talked about dogs.
Dog breeds.
Dog walks.
The places they liked to go.
The mess they make.
The way they somehow manage to take over your entire house despite being relatively small.
At the time my parents had recently bought a Miniature Schnauzer, so it was an easy conversation to have.
The funny thing was, the more we talked, the more I learned.
Not about the car.
About her.
The Moment Everything Changed
As we were driving, I happened to mention the ski hatch in the rear armrest.
You know the one.
The little flap that folds down allowing long items to pass through from the boot.
Skis.
Timber.
Anything awkward and lengthy.
“Your dogs could probably poke their heads through there.”
I honestly don’t know why I said it.
It certainly wasn’t part of any sales training programme.
I wasn’t following a process.
It was simply a throwaway comment during a conversation.
But her reaction was immediate.
She laughed.
Then she started talking about how much her dogs would love that.
Then she started imagining it.
That Was The Moment Everything Changed
Nothing had changed about the car.
Everything had changed about how she saw it.
The Hatchback Suddenly Made Sense
Nothing had changed about the car.
The specification was exactly the same.
The dimensions hadn’t changed.
The boot hadn’t magically become larger.
The finance hadn’t changed.
The car was exactly the same as it had been thirty minutes earlier.
The difference was she could now see herself owning it.
She could picture her dogs travelling in it.
She could picture her daily life with it.
The hatchback had stopped being a hatchback. It had become her car.
By the time we returned to the dealership she had already decided.
Deal done.
The Lesson Stayed With Me
Looking back, that sale taught me one of the most important lessons of my career.
Customers rarely buy because they understand a feature.
They buy because they understand how that feature fits into their life.
The ski hatch didn’t sell the car.
The story did.
The conversation did.
The understanding did.
Too often in automotive retail we focus on:
- features
- specifications
- technology
- horsepower
- boot capacity
But customers are usually focused on something completely different.
- school runs
- holidays
- shopping
- commuting
- dogs
- family life
They’re not buying a specification sheet. They’re buying a solution.
Features Tell. Stories Create Ownership.
This is one of the reasons I still believe physical demonstrations are so powerful.
A customer doesn’t need to be told a panoramic roof exists.
Open it. Let them experience it.
A customer doesn’t need to be told the boot is large.
Help them imagine loading it.
A customer doesn’t need to be told a 360-degree camera is useful.
Let them reverse the car and experience it.
Sales Lesson
Features Tell. Demonstrations Sell. Stories Create Ownership.
And ownership closes deals.
Thirty Years Later…
After three decades in automotive retail, I’ve worked with some incredible salespeople.
The best ones were rarely the people who knew the most about cars.
They were the people who understood the customer sitting in front of them.
Because the truth is simple.
The car was never the reason she bought the car.
Understanding her was.
